NEW DELHI: India's steel production in April grew around three-fold compared to world's average growth of 1.2 percent at 6 million tonne. India's production figure was a tenth of Chinese output of 60 million tonnes.
Data prepared by industry body World Steel Association (WSA) showed India's crude steel production in April was 6 million tonnes, up 3.5 percent over the same month last year. WSA, whose members produce around 85 percent of world's steel, said global production during April 2012 was 128 million tonnes, 1.2 percent growth over the same month last year.
Clocking a growth of 2.6 percent, China's production was 60.6 million tonnes. China was the highest steel producer in the world during the month. Japan came in as distant second with 9.072 million tonnes production. As a whole, Asia produced 83.459 million tonnes during the reporting month, which translates into around 54 percent of the global output.
Among the European Union nations, Germany produced 3.6 million tonnes, a 5.5 percent decline over April 2011. Italy produced 2.4 million tonnes, down 3.2 percent. Production in France was 1.4 million tonnes and it was 1.3 million tonnes in Spain.
Turkey's crude steel production for April 2012 was 2.9 million tonnes which is a 4.7 percent growth over the same month last year. Recording a growth of 9.3 percent, production in the US was 7.7 million tonnes. Brazil's production was three million tonnes.
"The world crude steel capacity utilisation ratio in April 2012 remained nearly unchanged at 81.1 percent compared to March 2012," WSA said.
