Coconut shell Activated Carbon is a form of carbon which has been processed by the action of high pressure steam on Coconut Shell Charcoal to give an extremely high density of micro porosity and surface area. A single gram of high potency activated carbon would have around 1500 square meters of surface area. The potency of activated carbon depends on the iodine value which in turn is determined by the activation process. The properties mentioned above makes it an ideal product for absorption of impurities and is extensively used in water and air purification and residue recovery in the precious metal manufacture.
Coconut Shell Activated Carbon is also impregnated with other chemicals to make the absorption process more efficient. For instance, it is impregnated with phosphoric acid for efficient absorption of alkaline gases such as ammonia or gasses emanating from protein breakdown. Potassium Permanganate impregnation will enhance the absorption of odours and other gases such as Ethylene.
