Sophisticated embedded solution
Fig. 1: Lilly-9 modules 12 and 15
An elaborate module system for low power applications with ARM processors. ETX-System is a dimensional factor which, for good reasons, has been able to establish itself in the past and nearly the and nearly the ETX standard is LILLY. We aim at creating a family with a modular assembly, concerning dimension as well as performance, to meet the demands of the rough industry, automotive technology, medical technology, railroad engineering, control engineering and facility management. A dimensional factor with the necessary scalability to support you in the individual application.
The right decision - quick and easy
Finding the right system factors to opt for a design of a system solution depends on the demands, the embedding and the integration of the system. What and where are the system parameters? To choose between a X86 CPU and a system on chip (SoC) ARM processor is similar to the decision what a car to choose and to buy. The power of the engine is not always the main criterion for the mobility and purpose of the system. Therefore, our CPU performance is not always the measure of our application. The reasons that lead to a decision are most likely: how well does the designer know the system architecture and how about his experience?
The best known and most common CPU systems are the X86 modules, which started at the beginning of the 70ies with the legendary 8080 CPU series with 1.5-2 MHz.
Since 1999 the british Holding company ARM focuses on licensing its ARM processors together with cooperating partner companies.
Starting with ARM-1 to ARM-7 (40-180 Mhz) the series continues with the ARM-9 with 200-400 MHz, further developments within this generation are the ARM10 with 800 MHz and ARM11 with a maximum of 1.2 GHz.
INCOstartec GmbH, as a specialist in the field of embedded computers, enlarges its variety of products according to customer demands and provides advice for the user concerning possible solutions for automation processes with industrial PCs and the integration into the intranet/ internet. Being a powerful partner, INCOstartec has direct access to logistics and support of companies acting on an international level. This means for you as our customer: lower prices, short delivery periods and the best support you can get. On-site-consultancy and initial training keep the design-in time for the user to a minimum.

ARM CPU advantages
The advantage of these RISC processors lies in the combination of CPU performance and peripheral functions in one CHIP. The system on chips (SoC) set up a longer product life cycle because they underlie not only to the performance pressure of the CPU. With the help of modern processor architecture, losses in performance can be held low. The great variety of performance and periphery within the SoC processors makes it possible to scale the systems, which are thus smaller and therefore better-priced.
Disadvantages of the SoC systems
It proves to be disadvantageous that ARM Holding are licensing their ARM cores. In consequence, there exist a lot of companies with varying performance/ periphery for many different applications. The designer has to cope with the differing design support of the particular companies.
The system designer has to handle special software tools and matching compilers with limited software distribution and restricted operating systems (i.e. LINUX®, Microsoft® Windows® CE.NET etc.).
The ARM SoC systems are mostly applied in large quantities. The intensive hardware and software development increase the time-to-market period.
