Sell Makhana (Euryale Ferox) / Foxnut / Gorgon Nut [Product #: SRS 0011]
In India, makhna is mainly consumed in propped (rosted and fried) form. It has been also reported that, ayurveda and unani texts have accepted its aphrodisiac and spermatogenic properties. Propped makhna cotains almost 12% of protein. The fruit has a great nutritional value - 76.9 per cent carbohydrate, 0.1 per cent fat, 1.3 per cent minerals and 12 per cent water.
We are sending some Indian recipes as follows:
>Makhane ka parantha
Roast and powder enough makhana to fill one cup. Boil one medium sized boiled potato. Mash potato and knead with makhana powder. Mix salt and chopped green chillies to taste. Make balls from the dough. Roll out as for chapattis and cook on tawa till sufficiently brown.
>Makhane ki sabzi
Make potato-cottage cheese curry as usual. Add makhana to thicken the gravy. The curry will become creamy, rich and nutritious.
>Makhane ka raita
Soak makhana seeds in luke warm water for a few minutes. Whip curd. Add salt, roasted cumin seed powder and chopped green chillies. Squeeze all water out of the makhana and mix thoroughly with the curd. Serve chilled with meal.
>Makhane ki kheer
Heat two tablespoons of ghee or unsalted butter. Roast makhana in a heavy-bottomed vessel. Grind it coarsely. Boil milk and add sugar. Add makhana to the milk, and allow it to boil for a few minutes. Sprinkle green cardamom powder, and garnish with chopped almonds or rose petals (as per preference). Cool and serve.
>Makhana as morning cereal
Add makhana to a cup of hot or cold milk. Add fine slices of bananas, chopped almonds and raisins.
>Makhana snacks
Roast makhana with or without fat in a wok. Roast some muskmelon or pumpkin seeds and mix in with the makhana. Sprinkle seasoning, and store in an airtight jar.
The medicinal properties of makhana are well-documented. It is effective in cardio-vascular diseases, post delivery care, leucorrhoea and circulatory problems. Makhana is also believed to increase hormone secretion. It has been traditionally used to treat certain diseases such as beri beri. It is also used in the preparation of certain medicines and starch coating of Banarsi sarees.
