It was only just over 10 years ago that Professore Lanzara, a Rome academic and businessman, bought the old Baglio (farmstead) of San Vincenzo, near Menfi in the district of Agrigento, Western Sicily, and cleverly grafted onto the old buildings a state-of-the-art winery. The investment in renovation, construction and refurbishment, but most importantly, tending, replanting and caring for the 60 hectares of vineyards was huge. 2500m2 of underground cellars have been created in the soft "Tufa" rock of the area, filled with row upon row of finest French oak barrels, in which the Linea Riserva wines mature. Above them, in buildings fitting perfectly the old style of construction, are the vats, the bottling lines, laboratory and other winery departments. Most of the vines grow in a gentle valley with the bed of a stream in the middle, alongside olive groves and citrus plantations. The benign influence of the near-by sea moderates the extremes of the climate found further inland and provides excellent winegrowing conditions. Apart from the climate, it is firstly the skill of winemaker Alessandro Giarrapato and secondly modern warm climate techniques, which allowed Lanzara to excel not only with indigenous grapes, such as Cattaratto, Grillo and Nero d' Avola, but with international varieties, such as Syrah and Merlot. Thirdly, but perhaps most important, is total devotion to quality. All grapes are hand-picked, and Lanzara uses only the most ecologically friendly methods of tending and supporting the vines. Now that Lanzara has begun to win regular awards for its wines in Italy, Germany and the UK (e.g. silver/bronze for their 2004 Syrah/Merlot respectively at the 2006 International Wine Challenge in London), Lanzara wines are in much demand on the Continent and in the U.S.A. Most recently, Lanzara has even obtained the Holy Warrant as suppliers to the Vatican.
