A professional team led by myself, Sydney Selvon, will produce from July 1, 2006, a glossy, monthly color magazine covering all the economic centres of the Indian Ocean rim as much to inform the readership of economic trends, as to guidethem in their strategic decision-making. Actually, it comes at a time when the Indian Ocean Rim Association for Regional Cooperation (IOR-ARC), a Mauritian initiative supported by several other countries, will become increasingly active with the same vision as this magazine. It’s the first international magazine to be produced in Mauritius and distributed in Mauritius and also overseas (comprising India, the Mascarenes, France, African countries of the region, Australia, etc.). It will be bilingual, mainly in English, but with a French section with English translations. It will serve as a bridge between Asia and Africa via the Indian Ocean, and, more than that, between the economic centres of the Indian Ocean basin with information covering Malaysia, Indonesia, Singapore and even China, including Hong Kong and Shanghai. The stock exchange markets of the above-named regions and the stock exchange trends of the industrialized markets in general will be covered. We will offer you the best in terms of news and photos with the support of reputed, independent international news agencies. A core theme of the magazine will be investing in the Indian Ocean Basin: How? Why? Where? When? How are the regional markets doing? Where are the best deals? Business opportunities of all sorts will be presented. To introduce myself: Until February of this year, I was a Business Editor covering the new diamond mines of De Beers in Canada’s Great North as well as the gold mines and other extraction activities in one of the richest regions of the planet. I have written on the current rush on uranium. You can read me by typing my name on the home page of Northern News Services Limited. At the same time I was professionally active there, my 10th book (of which two published in Paris, London and New York) was being published in Port-Louis, Mauritius, in October 2005 – a second, revised, 526-page edition of my “A Comprehensive History of Mauriotius. Second Edition. Revised,” which follows my French 600-page version entitled “Histoire de Maurice. Des origines à nos jours” launched in 2003 by the Mauritian Minister of Foreign Affairs and the French Ambassador. My books sell well, even without any advertising and I have a magnificent readership that comprises many foreign visitors, especially investors who want more information about the economies of Mauritius and of the other Indian Ocean basin countries – which was an inspiration to the creation of the new magazine. I have been the chief editor of the large daily “Le Mauricien” and High Commissioner (Ambassador) of Mauritius in Australia. I was trained in the U.S. and have also worked on assignments for Associated Press, the BBC and the Paris-based Indian Ocean Newsletter. I have a considerable number of contacts in all spheres in Mauritius and also across the region, whether India, Reunion or Australia – and elsewhere. The magazine will be presented like internationally reputed magazines (Time, Far Eastern Economic Review, Le Point, etc.).
